ROCHESTER, NY (WROC) - Partly cloudy skies today as temperatures climb into the lower and middle 40s. Rain showers will hold off until tonight, likely after sunset. Showers help us ring in the new year as this storm system passes nearly overhead. Once it shifts our winds to a northwest flow, expect colder air to pour in throughout New Year's Day. Our high temperature will be in the morning and numbers fall into the lower 30s. Some form of lake effect will get going into the afternoon and overnight, marking a long stretch of heavy snow for some going into the rest of the week.  The lake effect snow that develops will include mostly northern Wayne County over through Oswego County. The flow will veer just a bit going into the weekend, and that could bring snow across Rochester as an upwind connection could help boost snowfall totals. There are signs that a more area-wide system could bring snow by the end of the weekend and early next week.
