ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) –  A security guard is recovering after a man, attempting to steal from a downtown liquor store, shot him in the leg. It started as a typical Sunday night at El Rey Liquors on Central in Downtown Albuquerque. "The gentleman comes in around 11:03 looks normal looks like an everyday person, appeared normal, clean cut," said Elijah, the store's general manager. Events: What’s happening around New Mexico December 27-January 2 News: Old Town artisans in Albuquerque at odds with each other, why some blame the city "They ask if he needs any help no looks like he was just browsing to buy alcohol and then around 11:10 is when he's in the corner here and he thinks one of my guys is not watching and that's when he decides to come out with two bottles," said Elijah. Surveillance video showed 35-year-old Kevin Metcalf, as he attempted to leave without paying. A security guard then tried to pull Metcalf back. "The bottles break, that's fine. No one gets them, that's cool," said Elijah. Video then showed as employees turned to walk back inside, Metcalf pulled out a gun and fired towarded them. "He shoots at him, assaults his life, you know, attempted murder for nothing," said Elijah. Elijah said the bullet went through the security guard's calf and through their front glass door. "It's sad, it's frustrating you know, It's frustrating, I was worried about my employee. You know, is he hurt? Is he alive, you know?" said Elijah. Elijah said the security guard is doing well and is recovering but it's something he never wanted to never wanted his employees to have to face. "I don't want my staff to come into work and have to fear for their life you know, I get it's a liquor store. I get all that but that's not part of the equation. You shouldn't watch out if you're going to get shot just doing your job," said Elijah. Albuquerque police located Metcalf a few blocks away shortly after. He's facing charges of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, aggravated shoplifting ,and negligent use of a deadly weapon.
