ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — The 14 corrections officers connected to the beating of an inmate at Marcy Correctional Facility were suspended without pay — with one having since resigned.
43-year-old Robert Brooks died on Dec. 10, 2024, a day after being transferred from Mohawk Correctional Facility. The Attorney General's Office said his death followed an encounter with correction officers at Marcy Correctional Facility.
UPDATE: Per @GovKathyHochul’s office on death of Marcy Correctional Facility inmate Robert Brooks.-13 CO’s are suspended without pay-One CO resigned-Governor visited Marcy today, more information expected soon. @News_8— Natalie Kucko (@NatalieKucko) December 30, 2024
Body-worn camera footage was released last week depicting Brooks being punched and kicked by officers at the facility. During the incident, Brooks was handcuffed inside the infirmary. The Attorney General's Office added the officers had their cameras turned on, but it was in "standby mode" and did not pick up any audio.
This comes as the corrections facility is at the center of multiple lawsuits, alleging that Marcy correctional officers have attacked incarcerated individuals. At least one of the officers connected to the Brooks incident was also named in another lawsuit alleging a similar assault.
When reached for comment, DOCCS said they could not provide one pending litigation.
Governor Hochul visited the facility on Monday and made the announcement the officers were suspended without pay as of last week.
According to DOCCS, the following staff members have been suspended without pay:
Sgt. Michael Mashaw
Sgt. Glenn Trombly
CO Matthew Galliher
CO Nicholas Anzalone
CO David Kingsley
CO Nicholas Kieffer
CO Robert Kessler
CO Michael Fisher
CO Christopher Walrath
CO Michael Along
CO Shea Schoff
CO David Walters
Nurse Kyle Dashnaw
Only one person has since resigned, that's CO Anthony Farina.
