MCCOLL, S.C. (WBTW) -- Former McColl Mayor George Garner refused to pull over and then tried to evade Marlboro County sheriff's deputies before colliding head-on with an 18-wheeler late last month, according to audio obtained Monday by News13. Between 2:34 and 2:40 p.m. on Nov. 26, deputies followed Garner along Highway 34 after he left a Marlboro County cemetery, calling ahead for help as the 49-year-old's black Chevrolet Tahoe crossed into Darlington County, according to the audio provided to News13 by Marlboro County E911 through a Freedom of Information Act request. ‘Great man’: McColl still coming to grips with mayor’s death "Hey, if you can get that tag, notify Darlington."  Audio logs from Marlboro County E911 "Central, notify Darlington. We're coming into their county on Highway 34. Black in color Tahoe," a deputy said at 2:39 p.m. Then, "we were looking for a missing person. We're trying to get him pulled over now. He's not stopping for us." Within a minute of that update, the incident ended when Garner crashed into the truck on Cashua Ferry Road. "He's going around vehicles. He's trying to get away from us," a deputy said. "He just 10-50, 10-50! He just ran into an 18-wheeler head-on." The term "10-50" is police code for a traffic accident. In addition to requesting the audio, News13 also sent public records requests in late November to the South Carolina Highway Patrol and the Marlboro County Sheriff's Office. The SCHP is working on our request, but the sheriff's office did not respond to our request in more than 10 business days, which violates state public records laws. News13 also reached out to the county's administrator about this request. We're still waiting to hear back from the Marlboro County Sheriff's Office and county administrator as of this publication.
