WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) - The Salina Animal Shelter is initiating a quarantine for all dogs in the shelter due to a giardia outbreak.
Giardia is a microscopic parasite that can infect the intestines of dogs. It can cause diarrhea, vomiting, weight loss, dehydration, reduced appetite and abdominal pain. Dogs can get infected by ingesting feces-contaminated water, soil, food or objects.

The shelter says they are working with a veterinarian to manage the situation and ensure proper care. Giardia is treated with medications, and there is a vaccine to prevent dogs from becoming infected.
