The Jets are currently without a full-time general manager. But that hasn’t stopped owner Woody Johnson from setting up interviews for Gang Green’s vacant head coaching position. The Jets are scheduled to interview former Panthers and Commanders coach Ron Rivera this week, according to NFL Network. In addition, former Jets coach Rex Ryan told ESPN New York that he expects to speak to the team about the opening after the conclusion of the season, which ends with their Week 18 game against the Dolphins. Johnson would reportedly like to hire a coach with previous experience, and Rivera and Ryan meet that criteria. “I believe I will,” Ryan said on ESPN New York when asked Monday if he expected to get an interview. “But no, I have not had any conversations with anybody within the organization. But I believe I will. “They are not going to bring anybody in, I’m sure, until after the season is done. And this is the way Woody has always operated, so we will see what happens once the season is over.” Ryan, 62, has not been bashful about campaigning to be the Jets coach again. Many Jets fans still feel nostalgic about Ryan’s 2009 and 2010 teams, which both reached the AFC Championship Game. However, after his back-to-back AFC Championship appearances, Ryan didn’t have the same success in the following three seasons. From 2011-2014, Ryan registered a 26-28 record with zero playoff appearances and was fired after defeating the Dolphins in his final game as Jets coach. Ryan also coached the Bills from 2015-16 and went 15-16, but he was fired after not making the playoffs in either season. Ryan has not coached in the NFL since he was fired by the Bills, but he interviewed for the Cowboys defensive coordinator job last February. He ended his four seasons with the organization with a 26-40-1 record. Most fans will remember Rivera from his nine seasons (2011-19) with the Panthers. During that time, Rivera led Carolina to a 76-63-1 mark, four playoff appearances and a trip to Super Bowl 50, where he lost to the Broncos. The Panthers fired Rivera in 2019 with four games remaining, and the team eventually finished 5-11. Gang Green can currently interview candidates not under contract with other NFL teams. Potential candidates who are working for teams can be interviewed after the regular season ends on Jan. 5. Johnson has already interviewed candidates for the vacant general manager position. Former Falcons general manager Thomas Dimitroff, former Titans general manager Jon Robinson, and Jim Nagy, the executive director of the Reese’s Senior Bowl, have all interviewed for the position. Johnson fired previous Jets general manager Joe Douglas on Nov. 19 after five-plus seasons and a 31-68 record during his tenure. Prior to that, Johnson fired coach Robert Saleh on Oct. 8 following a 2-3 start to this season.
