SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - Former President Jimmy Carter is being remembered by the community of western Massachusetts for his legacy of service.

"Thing about Jimmy Carter is his legacy is not so much having been a great president, Jimmy's legacy really started after he left the presidency," shared Former 22News Anchor, Barry Krieger. Local tributes poured in Sunday from the region for the longest-living former president who died at 100 years old."I think he was a very good man and meant well for the country," shared David Dover of Longmeadow. "He was really involved, he was a genuine person," shared Former 22News Anchor, Barry Krieger. The Carter Center released that the former president passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 29th at his home in Plains, Georgia where he was surrounded by family.During his time as commander-in-chief, he made several visits to the Baystate, his first visit in 1977 where he connected with Americans at the Town of Clinton's City Hall. His visit came during a time of high inflation and unemployment. The former president even stayed with a local family in town that evening. Now the community is remembering the service of the longest-living U.S. president. "With his work with the Habitat for Humanity, can't do any better than that," shared Victor Dynak of Longmeadow. "As far as his career goes, I think the best thing he did was having a peace Acord in the Middle East years back," expressed David Dover of Longmeadow. The 39th president of the United States had been receiving hospice care since February 2023. Just last November, his wife and former first lady, Rosalynn Carter passed away at 96.Their legacy is now remembered for their passion for global issues and human rights.
