Bird flu likely cause of dead geese in Harvey County
Dec 29, 2024
WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) - The City of Newton says dozens of dead geese have recently been reported at the wetlands on Southwest 14th Street.
The city says staff has been coordinating with the Kansas Department of Wildlife & Parks, which believes the deaths are likely due to avian flu. The birds will be left where they are to let nature take its course.
Bird flu cases have grown exponentially since November. Two weeks ago, the Kansas Department of Agriculture reported bird flu in two game bird operations in Rooks and Doniphan counties.

KDWP advises that if you see a migratory bird acting abnormally, you should report it to their biologists at 620-342-0658. They add that you should not handle birds that appear sick or injured. If you must hold a dead bird, wear disposable gloves, double bag it, and place it in your trash cart before disinfecting your hands and clothes.
