ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) – Saturday, the Rochester Kwanzaa Coalition gathered at the Memorial Art Gallery for the third day of Kwanzaa. An attendee is taught the basics of African drumming. (WROC/Trinity Wilson.) "Kwanzaa is extremely important because it's a cultural holiday, it's not religious, it's cultural and it embraces the best of African culture, throughout the world, and here in America, and then abroad," said Paul Adell Jr., the chairman of the Rochester Kwanzaa Coalition. Every day for the seven days of Kwanzaa, a new principle is highlighted. Saturday's principle is called "Ujima," signifying the importance of collective work and responsibility within the community. "Collective work and responsibility, being able to pool our resources together, work together in an organized way to get things done and achieve our goals, said Adell. Guests at the MAG Saturday were treated to pan-African style drumming, artwork and a film screening. Week-long Kwanzaa Celebration announced in Rochester Sunday marks day four, highlighting "Ujamaa," the principle of cooperative economics. A celebration will be happening at the Montgomery Center from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.
