SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) — A robust storm system that is sweeping across the southeastern U.S. Saturday night will bring the risk of strong and severe storms to the Coastal Empire and Lowcountry Sunday afternoon. Sunday will be a Storm Team 3 Weather Aware Day. This system is developing with an area of low pressure and trailing cold front. It is located over Louisiana and Mississippi as of Saturday evening. Numerous severe thunderstorms and tornadoes have been developing throughout the day and will continue overnight. Severe storms locally on Sunday will not be as widespread as what is being experienced tonight in the lower Mississippi River Valley. However, there is a medium risk for severe storms to develop in the Coastal Empire and Lowcountry. SUNDAY'S THREATS The primary threat from any severe storms that develop in the Coastal Empire and Lowcountry will be damaging wind gusts in excess of 60 mph - strong enough to topple some trees and to produce some power outages. Even without severe storms, Sunday will be a breezy and gusty day. Sustained wind will be out of the south at 5-15 mph. Wind gusts will be in excess of 25 mph at times outside of sever storms. There will also be a low-end risk for an isolated tornado or two to develop with some of the stronger storms. This risk will be limited in our area. One thing helping to keep the tornado risk low is due to a southerly wind rather than out of the southeast. A south wind helps to minimize the development of rotating thunderstorms. The tornado risk is low, but not zero. There is potential for any of the stronger storms that develop to produce some hail. Just like the tornado risk, the overall hail risk is low, but not zero. Heavy rain is a likelihood as this system moves through the region Sunday afternoon. Some locations may receive over 1.50-2.00" of rain. Some localized flooding is possible in areas with poor drainage. TIMING Showers and storms will begin to develop during the morning - ahead of the main line after sunrise. The main line associated with the cold front will begin to move into our western counties by 10 a.m. - moving west to east. By 3 p.m., most of the area will be experiencing heavy rain and the potential for some severe storms. The main line is expected to be moving off of the cost by 5 p.m. Conditions will begin to dry out after 6 p.m. Be sure to have a way to receive critical weather alerts in the event there are any watches or warnings issued for the Coastal Empire or Lowcountry. A great tool for that is the WSAV Weather NOW app. It is free and is available in the Apple App Store or Google Play.
