UNM Health Sciences celebrates a year of discoveries and accomplishments

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – The University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center is highlighting all of its accomplishments and discoveries this year. UNM Researchers led the nation in the study of how microplastics impact human health.
They discovered the plastic particles in the placenta, kidney, liver, and brain. The university also made leaps in helping people suffering from substance abuse. It's home to the New Mexico Poison and Drug Information Center, which has a hotline people can call when they are experiencing a crisis.

They also broke ground on a $36 million children's psychiatric center, designed to be a safe and comfortable space to help struggling kids. Lastly, two boys got a second chance at life all thanks to UNM Hospital.
The university paid for a $6 million gene therapy treatment, helping brothers suffering from muscular dystrophy.
