Man's car window smashed in night filled with vehicle breakins

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- One man from Grandview says his car was broken into in a night filled with similar break-ins.
“I received a call this morning from a neighbor who asked me if I had a Kia,” Mike Dougherty said.
“I told her, 'Yes,' and she said, 'Better check it because there were some break-ins last night.'”
On Saturday afternoon, the car next to his had its window shattered on the ground, and the window was covered with tape. He thought for sure that his car would’ve been hit too.
“I was parked right next to the woman who got broken into,” he said.
“Luckily, I have a locking steering column bar.”

Dougherty says that he thinks the lock on the steering wheel deterred any would-be thieves from smashing his window, like his neighbors. He mentioned that the steering wheel lock, as well as another security system that prevents thefts, were installed due to recalls on his model of Kia.
He would encourage anyone who’s nervous about their car getting broken into, to check for recalls.
"Ask about the bar or the any device that you can get,” he said.
“See if there's a recall on her car and do whatever you can to keep it safe.”
He also mentioned that the community needs to be more aware of suspicious activities.
“If you see something, call the police,” he said.
“If you have a problem, call the police. Don't expect somebody else to do it for you.”
