The Addiction Center says that drug and alcohol use spike during the holidays. This can be especially true for teenagers and young adults since they usually have a lot of free time during their holiday break from school. That's why Bismarck-Burleigh Public Health is warning parents to follow these tips to reduce your child's risk for substance use: Spend time with your child. Officials say time together is a great way to show your kid that there are ways to have fun without alcohol or drugs. You can also have your kids join extracurricular activities during the break to keep them busy. Be a good role model. Bismarck-Burleigh Public Health says that if you want your child to follow safe and healthy behaviors, you have to set the example yourself. Keep the conversation open. Officials say it's important to have conversations with your child about drugs and alcohol. This is a great chance to clear up any misconceptions your child might have about substances. Keep your house safe. Counselors say you should make sure alcohol and drugs aren't easily accessible in your home.
