MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- A Popeyes employee was arrested on Friday after he allegedly stole over $1,000 from the fast food restaurant's safe, Memphis Police said. On December 15 at approximately 11:55 a.m., officers responded to a reported burglary at Popeyes Chicken, located at 1370 Union Avenue. The store manager reported that an individual unlawfully entered the business through the drive-thru window at 12:05 a.m. after the store had closed and removed $1,400 from the safe. The manager identified the suspect as Michael Brown, an employee, based on the suspect's build and clothing, which matched those Brown had been seen wearing earlier that day. Michael Brown. (SCSO) One of Brown's co-workers told officers that he saw suspicious behavior from Brown on the night of the incident. According to the police report, he said that Brown approached him outside the business and asked how long he would be standing there, a question the co-worker said he found unusual. The co-worker also said he saw Brown change into a different black hoodie than the one he had been wearing when he left work earlier, which police said was consistent with an attempt to obscure his identity. Police said surveillance footage from multiple locations further implicate Brown. Video from the Exxon gas station at 1355 Union Avenue, directly across the street from Popeyes, showed Brown at the gas station just after 11 p.m., leaving multiple times and making his way toward the gas station's dumpster. At 11:55 p.m., surveillance footage shows Brown leaving the dumpster area, looking around as if to ensure he was not seen and heading toward Union Ave. Additional video evidence from nearby businesses showed an individual, who investigators believed to be Brown, running behind the Popeyes at 11:58 p.m. At 12:05 a.m., the individual is seen opening the drive-thru window with ease, which police said indicated familiarity with the premises and suggested prior knowledge that the window was unlocked. $70K missing from Memphis Firehouse Subs, fraud investigation underway The individual then entered the restaurant, allegedly stole $1,400 from the safe and exited without triggering any alarms or resistance. On December 27 at approximately 1:30 p.m., Brown voluntarily appeared at Crump Station, entered the interview room and provided a statement. Investigators said that during the interview, the information Brown provided was inconsistent with the evidence collected and he was subsequently placed under arrest. However, when Brown was told he was under arrest, he fled the interview room in an apparent attempt to evade capture. Once captured, Brown resisted being placed in handcuffs. He is due in court on December 30.
