State sales tax on groceries going away for Kansans on Jan. 1
Dec 28, 2024
KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Kansans won't have to pay a state sales tax on their groceries in 2025, starting on January 1.
Kansas voters passed a three-year plan to cut back on state sales taxes on groceries back in 2022. Now, that plan is paying off for shoppers across the state.

While groceries will still have city and county taxes applied, the current 2% state sales tax on grocery purchases is going all the way down to 0%. Most city and county taxes in the state range from 0.01% to 2%.
A big reason for this change has been the increasing prices of groceries in recent years. According to the USDA, from 2019 to 2023, the all-food Consumer Price Index saw a massive 25% increase.
