Colts rule QB Anthony Richardson out for Giants game
Dec 28, 2024
INDIANAPOLIS – The Indianapolis Colts have ruled starting quarterback Anthony Richardson out for Sunday’s road game against the New York Giants.
That means veteran Joe Flacco returns to the starting lineup.
Richardson had been questionable despite not practicing this week because of back and foot injuries, and coach Shane Steichen said Friday the team would use “the next 48 hours’ to determine Richardson’s status.
It didn’t take that long.
Richardson will miss a game because of injury for the fourth time in his brief career. An oblique injury forced him to miss two games earlier this year while his rookie season included missing one game with a concussion and the final 12 with an injury to his right shoulder that required surgery.
Steichen said the back injury is more of an issue for Richardson than the foot.
Flacco was signed in March as a one-year, $8.7 million insurance policy for Richardson, and the Colts once again must cash in.
He’s started four games and came off the bench to finish the 27-24 win over Pittsburgh in week 4 after Richardson suffered the oblique injury.
Flacco has completed 113-of-170 passes (66.5%) for 1,167 yards with nine touchdowns, five interceptions and a 91.5 passer rating. He’s been sacked 13 times.
The Colts also ruled JuJu Brents out. The second-year cornerback out of Warren Central High School remains on the injured reserve list (knee) but has practiced the last two weeks.
