Spearfish student wins South Dakota’s Congressional App Challenge for second time
Dec 28, 2024
For the second year in a row, Casie Dale, from Spearfish has won South Dakota U.S. Representative Dusty Johnson’s Congressional App Challenge.
This year, Dale designed an app called “Realized Accumulated Wireless Radiation (RAWR).” The app helps users visualize the radiation coming from phones, computers and cell towers. The visualization can then help a person compare their exposure to an evolving standard for radio frequency exposure.
Dale’s winning entry last year was “Siren Shield.” That app could be used to wirelessly activate a Hail Protection System to protect gardens and windows. The app actively listens for the tone of the local weather siren, and once detected, a motor lowers a shield onto the garden and window to protect from hail.
“Improving STEM skills and participation in STEM careers is extremely important to remain competitive with China,” said U.S. Representative Dusty Johnson. “The Congressional App Challenge seeks to increase interest and understanding in computer science. I’m glad students like Casie are improving their coding and entrepreneurial skills.”
