HILO, Hawaii (KHON2) -- If you live on the Big Island and are looking to get lifeguard certified, head over to Hilo to participate in a month-long certification course. Get Hawaii's latest morning news delivered to your inbox, sign up for News 2 You The Department of Parks and Recreation's lifeguard certification course will be held at the NAS Swimming Pool starting Jan. 10. WATCH: Surfer tumbles down super-sized wave at Jaws on Maui, survives Participants in the American Red Cross Lifeguarding Certification Course will be trained on various swimming techniques, which will include deep water training. The course will be held on Fridays until Feb. 7 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Officials noted the course "follows a series of successful certification courses held in Hilo, Kona and Pāhoa last fall and is an opportunity to equip even more community members with important lifesaving skills. To get started with the program, participants should be at least 15 years old on or before the final scheduled session of the course. Participants must also complete two prerequisite swimming skills evaluations. The course fee of $122 must be made in cash before or on the first day of class.
