MADERA, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – A 9-year-old boy who was struck by a speeding vehicle on his way to school was gifted a new bicycle organized by Madera area CHP.
Officers say on Sept. 19, 2023, Axel Hernandez Franco was on his way to class at Liberty Charter School. As he ran across the street, outside the area where the crossing guard was located, he was struck by a vehicle that was speeding through the school zone.
Police say Axel sustained major injuries and has since gone through several surgeries. Although he still has a lengthy recovery ahead of him, officers say he is in good spirits.
Axle's new John Deere bicycle was made possible by a donation from Madera area CHP and local CHiPs For KIDS supporter Midland Tractor. Axel also received his very own CHP patch, a helmet, and bicycle accessories from CHP's Bicycle and Pedestrian Safety, Education, Enforcement, and Awareness Program (BESEEN III) Grant.
