PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) - A Portsmouth family is counting their blessings after a stray bullet pierced their apartment just feet away from their child narrowly avoiding tragedy Dec. 23 - the day before Christmas Eve. The incident occurred at the Westwinds Apartments, a complex where residents say gun violence has become an all-too-frequent concern. The mother, who asked to remain anonymous, described the harrowing experience of hearing gunshots while inside her home. "Well, at first I just heard the gunshots and I was trying to process what's happening. And my husband kneeled to get down... And then I heard glass shatter. But I wasn't sure what that was at first. And then my husband told me to come get the baby, and that's when I saw it." The bullet shattered a window, waking the family’s baby from sleep. Fortunately, no one was injured, but the close call left the parents shaken. The family reported the incident to apartment management, who apologized and promised to repair the window but offered little reassurance about safety. The Westwinds complex is less than two minutes from the site of another violent crime earlier this year, where a body was found burned in a dumpster in a church parking lot. Portsmouth police confirmed they are aware of the gunfire at Westwinds Apartments. Attempts to reach apartment management were unsuccessful, with calls left on hold or disconnected. For now, the family involved is grateful they escaped unharmed. Still, they and others in the neighborhood are left wondering how long it will be before someone is seriously hurt.
