NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) – Chances are you know someone who is sick right now, and it could be because Louisiana has one of the highest number of flu cases in the nation. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Louisiana and Oregon are the two states that had the most flu activity in the country as of December 21. A weekly influenza surveillance report prepared by the CDC’s Influenza Division shows flu activity in Louisiana is very high. Cases are up from even last week. It's a trend local doctors are seeing at their hospitals, including Children's Hospital New Orleans. “We've been very full on our acute care and intensive care units with children with respiratory illness, and it's been predominantly Influenza A and RSV so far this winter,” explained Dr. Mark Kline, chief medical officer and physician-in-chief at Children's Hospital New Orleans. “We haven't seen very much COVID, fortunately, just yet.” Electrical fire at Royal Street senior facility leaves residents displaced by: Raeven Poole The flu is also taking a toll on adults, like Good Morning New Orleans anchor Amy Russo. “I'd say the worst symptoms I've had so far are nausea and the swollen lymph nodes because it's just unreal dealing with that,” said Russo. “Yeah, it feels like you're fighting for your life, honestly.” After seeking advice from a doctor, Russo was urged to take a flu test to confirm the diagnosis. “The flu test came back positive, and [the doctor] recommended that I get some Tamiflu, take some ibuprofen, [get] lots of fluids and lots of sleep as well,” said Russo. “So, I've been trying to do that the best I can.” Just last year, the state's flu cases were among the worst in the country. Dr. Kline believes the trend is because of a lack of motivation to get a flu shot. “I understand as well as anyone, I think, that there's a lot of vaccine fatigue out there after the COVID years,” Kline said. “People are tired of hearing about vaccination. They think there are too many vaccines that are recommended, but this is one that really is important and should be given on an annual basis.” Dr. Kline also said it doesn't appear their flu cases have peaked, so it's likely this trend will continue for the next few weeks.
