HONOLULU (KHON2) -- A toddler was saved by his mother Christmas night when he bolted toward the 400 foot cliff of Kilauea while his family watched the sunset at Hawaii National Park.

The mother grabbed the child about a foot away from the cliff’s edge.
With this disaster turned Christmas miracle, authorities are reminding those to stay on the trails, out of closed areas and keep a close watch on their children. Ignoring a warning or acting recklessly could risk it all, especially while Kilauea is erupting.
“The hazards that coincide with an eruption are dangerous, and we have safety measures in place including closed areas, barriers, closure signs and traffic management,” said Park Superintendent Rhonda Loh. “Your safety is our utmost concern, but we rely on everyone to recreate responsibility.”

The hazards do not apply to just those on foot, however.
Drivers are urged to slow down and watch out for pedestrians and nēnē, the Hawaiian goose, and to drive with aloha while in the park. It is also important to drive with low beams on while other cars and pedestrians are present.
Despite the fact that Kilauea’s eruption has entered a pause, eruptions could restart at any time and toxic gas emissions are still high. Visitors should monitor the air quality before and during their visit, and people with conditions like respiratory issues or pregnancy should not visit.
While Hawaii National Park’s sights create lifelong memories, it is important to maintain caution while visiting.
“National parks showcase nature’s splendor but they are not playgrounds,” Loh said.
