HONOLULU (KHON2) -- It's officially that time of year to begin taking down those Christmas decorations. After you remove the lights, ornaments and other decorations from your Christmas tree, what are the next steps to ensure the tree is properly disposed of? Get Hawaii's latest morning news delivered to your inbox, sign up for News 2 You The City and County of Honolulu's Department of Environmental Services reminds all residents to take advantage of its convenient disposal programs. Petco Love invests $50,000 into Maui Humane Society to improve care for small animals If you are one of the 160,000-plus households who take part in the curbside green waste collection program, you can cut up your tree and place it in the bin for pickup on your regular refuse collection day. The lid should be fully closed after placing your tree inside. If your tree has tinsel or flocking on it, it should be cut, bagged and placed in the gray cart. Homes with manual curbside collection should cut their tree into three-foot sections and tied into a bundle before being placed on the curb for pickup. Another option is to drop off your tree at any ENV Convenience Center, excluding Wahiawa, or Kapaa Transfer Station in Kailua. Live trees without flocking and tinsel can be dropped off for free at Hawaiian Earth Recycling in Wahiawa. Two temporary Christmas tree drop-off sites in Kihei and Makawao on Maui will also be available starting Saturday, Dec. 28 through Sunday, Jan. 5. Residents can drop off their trees at Kihei Recycling Center or Makawao Recycling Center from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily.
