BERKELEY COUNTY, W.Va. (DC News Now) -- A jury found a 62-year-old man guilty of second-degree sexual assault and burglary, officials announced Thursday. The Berkeley County Office of the Prosecuting Attorney said that Kenneth Lloyd Rickard Sr. of Martinsburg faces 11 to 40 years in prison for a sexual assault that happened on Sept. 6, 1998. Prosecutors plan to file for an additional trial to increase that sentence -- if the jury agrees, Rickard will receive a mandatory sentence of life in prison with a minimum of 15 years of actual incarceration before a chance at parole. PICTURES: See West Virginia’s Christmas past from 100+ years ago Almost 27 years ago, an "unknown assailant" broke into a woman's Inwood home around 3 a.m. and sexually assaulted her. She called police almost immediately, and the investigation started. She underwent the necessary examinations, but nobody could identify a suspect at the time and the case went cold. In 2016, West Virginia got grant money to outsource over 2,600 untested sexual assault kits. One of them was the kit in this case. Prosecutors got a positive DNA match from the sperm in the 1998 sexual assault kit to Rickard's DNA, which had been added to The Combined DNA Index System after he was convicted for breaking and entering in 2005. Rickard agreed to speak with a captain, during which time he claimed that he didn't know the victim and never had sex with her. He also agreed to do further testing. The captain "sent the DNA sample he obtained from Rickard to Marshall University for additional testing. Upon the conclusion of Marshall’s analysis, the random match probability of another U.S. Caucasian male having the same DNA profile as Rickard was determined to be 1 in 111.6 octillion. "
