FORECAST: Showers arrive tonight, soggy this weekend
Dec 27, 2024
Another morning filled with low clouds, fog, and chilly temperatures finally gave way to some sunshine this afternoon. Cloudy skies are still stuck in place across western MD and WV, but the rest of the DMV is seeing some filtered sunshine through high clouds and haze. While it's still chilly, temperatures rise as the sun breaks through, up into the mid-40s. Temperatures are still in the 30s to the north and west, where the clouds remain stubborn. This filtered sunshine won't last long as more clouds arrive late afternoon into the evening. A storm system will pass west of us tonight into Saturday, ushering in scattered showers starting around 8-10 PM tonight.
Waves of rain will keep it soggy tonight, with a brief freezing drizzle possible across the mountains, where temperatures will still be around freezing. This threat of winter weather will be short-lived as it gets progressively warmer on Saturday, with highs expected to hit the 50s. Scattered showers will remain in play, but plenty of dry stretches will be throughout the day. Another low will churn up along the Gulf Coast and head our direction on Sunday, bringing steadier, more consistent rain for the end of the weekend. The afternoon and evening will be incredibly soggy, with temperatures rising into the 60s. As the cold front with this storm system sweeps in, it will turn breezy, and there could even be a few rumbles of thunder.
Drier weather will return on Monday as one storm system clears, but it won't last long, with an active pattern continuing to end 2024. With some sunshine breaking back out, it will stay warm into New Year's Eve, with highs in the 40s and 50s. Another disturbance will bring rain back as you kick off those New Year celebrations Tuesday night, and it will stay soggy as we ring in 2025. Gusty northwest winds will dry us out on New Year's Day, but they will also usher in colder air for the first few days of the new year. High temperatures will tumble back into the 30s and 40s for the end of next week, with overnight lows falling back into the teens and 20s.
Have a fantastic rest of your Friday, and stay dry this weekend!
