St. Paul search warrants: Police seized drugs at home where boy, 1, was found unresponsive and later died
Dec 27, 2024
Police who responded to a 911 call about an unresponsive 1½-year-old boy on Christmas saw multiple pieces of tinfoil with residue, a potential indicator of fentanyl use, in the St. Paul home, according to newly-filed search warrant affidavits.
Jackson Joseph Weidell was pronounced dead soon after at Regions Hospital on Wednesday and police arrested his parents, who were home, on suspicion of manslaughter. His cause of death is pending toxicology results, but police have said preliminary information is that narcotics may have played a role.
The couple’s two other children, who are 3 weeks and 4 years old, were also in the Dayton’s Bluff home and were taken to a hospital to be evaluated for possible fentanyl exposure, according to police and the search warrant affidavits. The infant was born with fentanyl in his system and Ramsey County Child Protective Services has an open case as a result, the documents said.
When the 4 year old was born in late 2020, she also had narcotics in her system and was taken from her parents in a child protection matter, according to public court documents. The couple, which court documents said had a history of chemical dependency, completed treatment and their child was returned to them, with that child protection case closed in March 2022.
Asked by the Pioneer Press Friday how the couple’s children were still in their care, given the new information about the baby recently born with drugs in his system, a spokesman for Ramsey County said information about child protection is private and they couldn’t comment.
Dad said he found son unresponsive, lips turning blue
Police interviewed Jackson’s parents, who are married. Jackson’s 31-year-old mother told police she was in the shower when her husband, 38, found their 1-year-old son. Officers reported that she “appeared to have no affect when speaking to the officers” about Jackson, the affidavits said.
Jackson’s father said he’d been sleeping from 2 a.m. until he woke up about 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, according to police. He said he found Jackson next to him on the couch, unresponsive and his lips turning blue. He called 911.
Officers were dispatched at 1:33 p.m. to the home on Fifth Street near Earl Street when St. Paul Fire Department medics “requested a police response for a baby not breathing/possible fentanyl overdose,” and found medics giving CPR to Jackson, the affidavits said.
Tinfoil with burnt residue was seen by police on the living room couch, within reach of the children, and there was a “line” of powdery substance on a plate on a bathroom shelf. An officer found a piece of tinfoil with burnt residue under a child who he picked up from the couch.
Jackson’s mother told police that her husband “threatened her with a gun on numerous occasions,” the affidavits said. An investigator found a sawed-off shotgun with an obliterated serial number at the home.
The Pioneer Press is not naming the parents because they had not been charged as of Friday. Jackson’s mother was released from the Ramsey County jail Friday as the investigation continues. She could not be reached for comment.

Jackson’s father remained jailed as of Friday afternoon. He was charged Thursday with aiding and abetting felony theft in a case from the Vadnais Heights Walmart earlier this month.
After Jackson’s death, police collected drug paraphernalia — foil, pipes, straws, baggies, lighters — and suspected controlled substances, along with the shotgun, the inventories for the search warrants showed.
Police found records that showed Ramsey County Child Protective Services asked St. Paul officers to respond in July 2023 to a previous address of the couple “due to concerns the parents are using fentanyl, unable to make contact with parents in person … parent not following programs,” police quoted in the affidavits.
