CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- The Metro Richmond Zoo is asking for the public's help to name its new baby pygmy hippo that the zoo welcomed just before the holidays. The Metro Richmond Zoo's new pygmy hippo was born on Dec. 9 to parents Iris and Corwin and needs a name. (Photo: Metro Richmond Zoo)(Photo: Metro Richmond Zoo) The zoo has narrowed down the following four names for the public to vote on to name the new pygmy hippo: Poppy -- a flower like her mother's name Juniper -- an evergreen shrub to remember winter Hammie Mae -- a sweet and southern tie to Virginia ham Omi -- which means "water" in Yoruba, a language spoken in West Africa The poll will close at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 31 with the official name to be announced on New Year's Day.
