Richmond church serves families in need with Operation REACH

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- A Richmond church is continuing to open its doors and feed those in need this holiday season.
Since 2020, the Restoration Fellowship Christian Center has served more than 300 families and served nearly 20,000 meals. Pastors Renee China and Menia Johnson laid roots for Operation REACH to help those struggling with food insecurity.
Operation REACH (Restore, Encourage, Advance, Carry and Honor) is a non-profit organization with the paramount mission to restore families, build community relationships and bring a sense of hope in a time when things seem hopeless.
Johnson said it’s something she’s experienced firsthand.
“I know what it is to not have, especially when it comes to food, not having food to feed my children,” Johnson said. “We’ve had experiences where even seniors told us they’re eating like cat food or they don't have any food to eat. So, just making sure that the needs are being met, that's the joy I really hope to bring.”
They’ve since branched out their services with “REACH Mobile,” delivering free groceries throughout the week to residents who are homebound or don’t have transportation, at no cost. To gain more traction in the REACH area, flyers are distributed and placed on every meal container that is served.
“Being able to put a smile on somebody's face, being able to see that we took the edge off just a little bit, we are excited about that,” China said. “We can't feed the whole world. But the part that's in our measure, we're going to do our darndest to make sure that we are there for the people.”
Both pastors said they have even bigger plans for their place of worship. They’re hoping to expand the church into a soup kitchen, resource center and shelter for residents.
