As weather threatens, Arkansas town's residents watch skies
Dec 27, 2024
MARIANNA, Ark. — There's a very good chance some communities in our area will see stormy weather for the last weekend of 2024, with the possibility of heavy rain, hail and damaging winds.
In Marianna, Arkansas, folks watch the sky closely when weather threatens, and for good reason.
Miranda Stanbery, manager of O'Reilly Auto Parts in Marianna, vividly remembers the morning of May 22, 2024.
"We were here at work and the power went out. We saw a transformer blow across the street. We went to the front door and opened them up and was watching it rain," Stanbery said. "It got really loud, really dark, real fast and then the storm blew the roof off the building."
A powerful storm sent employees running to their "safe place" for shelter.

That storm left folks in this Lee County community without power for days.
But Stanbery is watching the sky, hopeful there won't another disaster, with the possibility of severe weather for this last weekend of 2024.
"The main thing we're concerned about is flash flooding or flooding," said Brandon Richardson, Director of the Lee County Office of Emergency Management. "Since we've already had all the rain over the past few days and they're anticipating another one to three inches of rain, we're just watching for flooding right now."
Friday, the Marianna Police Department alerted residents though social media to the possibility of strong storms Saturday from 4 p.m. to midnight.
Folks here can stay weather aware by downloading the free Code Red weather alert app. It's the system used by the Lee County Office of Emergency Management during severe weather.
But just the thought of a repeat of May's storm is too much for Ellen Fraction, manager of Cheers liquor store.
"It makes me feel a little scary but I'm just going to leave it in the hands of the Lord and pray. That's all we can do is pray. That's all I can do," she said.
Richardson says should the need arise, the Lee County Courthouse basement serves as a shelter.
