The final Friday of the year turned out to be a damp and dreary one as a wave of low pressure sliding by to our northwest brought a fairly large area of rain to Central and Eastern Kentucky. The day started dry before the rain moved in with another unseasonably mild day despite the showers around with afternoon highs back into the low and mid-50s. Most locations picked between a quarter and a half inch of rainfall with much more on the way as we head into the weekend. After some lingering sprinkles/drizzle into the early hours of Saturday much of the daylight hours could end up dry as we’ll be in between storm systems so do expect some dry time to kick off the weekend, although the patchy drizzle could linger for a while in spots. A strong area of low pressure will make a run for the Ohio Valley from the southwest late Saturday increasing our rain chances for Saturday night and into Sunday. It will be another unseasonably mild day with afternoon highs surging all the way into the mid-60s, which is nearly 20 degrees above average for this time of the year and not far off from record highs for the date. Moderate to even heavy pockets of rain will be possible with a few embedded thunderstorms Saturday night into Sunday morning. A widespread 1″-3″ rain event looks likely so watch for some minor nuisance flooding in the low lying areas. A brief break in the active weather pattern is expected to begin the week Monday but some lingering clouds could keep the sunshine away in a few sports. We aren’t looking at any big push of colder air behind the weekend storm system so temperatures will remain above average with afternoon highs in the mid-50s. Yet another wave of low pressure will roll through the region on New Year’s Eve so more wet weather looks to be on the table. Hopefully the majority of the moisture will be exiting the area by the time folks head out to celebrate the new year. Right on cue as we welcome 2025, colder air will slowly return to the Ohio Valley with temperatures much more indicative of the beginning of January to kick off the new year. Afternoon highs on New Year’s Day should top out in the upper 30s to low 40s with additional cold air pouring in later next week. Some of the data is showing a fast moving clipper system diving in from the northwest late next Friday so we’ll have to watch that system for the potential of a few snow showers around depending on the track. Otherwise it will continue to feel like January with below average temperatures settling in for quite a while. ABC 36 HOUR FORECAST FRIDAY NIGHT: Mild with patchy drizzle. Lows in the low-50s.
