Remembering the Sanctuary on Penn after massive fire
Dec 27, 2024
INDIANAPOLIS - It’s been three days since the Sanctuary on Penn caught fire in the early hours of Christmas Eve.
As many couples scramble to find a new venue, others are reminiscing on their special day here looking at ways to remember this historic church and venue.
“It was super sad,” said Amanda Stevenson, who was married here three years ago. “It was a treasure to the city. We thought it was a really beautiful place to get married.”
Amanda and Jon just celebrated their third wedding anniversary after getting married at the Sanctuary on Penn in December of 2021.
“It was a great experience,” she said. “A fantastic, really unique place to get married and it was beautiful. It was perfect for us as a couple. We just really enjoyed our wedding. It was fantastic!”
They would've never guessed that the venue would be demolished nearly three years to the day of when they said ‘I do.’
“It’s just so sad to see it and to see it go and to see them actually tear it apart completely to the ground,” Stevenson said.
It all happened in the early morning hours of Christmas Eve. Crews battled the flames for more than an hour that morning. The structure was declared a total loss and demolition started later that day. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
As demolition continues couples who had plans to get married here are left with many questions.
The management from the venue posted on social media saying they will be reaching out to all affected couples on Friday. The assistant general manager posted the following message to Instagram on Friday:
“I wanted to say that I’ll personally be reaching out to the upcoming bridal couples today for next steps. Thank you to everyone who has celebrated beautiful moments with us and have shared your kind words and condolences with us. It means a lot to us at The Sanctuary to be surrounded by community as we mourn and try to pick up the remaining pieces. We wish you the best.”
Meanwhile, other couples are stopping by to get one last glimpse of the property, thankful they had the chance to get married here before the unexpected happened.
“We heard through their Instagram they were offering bricks,” Stevenson said. “They had a few bricks on the side so we came by just to pick up a brick. It really is just a nice memento of when we got married. Since we can't come back here again or visit it anymore it will be nice to keep it and it's a piece of history.”
And for couples who had plans to get married here, Stevenson wants to remind them to not lose hope just yet.
“There are a lot of beautiful places in the city to get married,” she said. “It's just sad that this one is gone but I am sure that there will be other places.”
Again, the couples who were planning to get married here in the coming weeks and months will be contacted by the venue on next steps for those celebrations.
