MONONA, Wis. (WFRV) - A tense situation unfolded on Thursday when Monona Police Department (MOPD) officers responded to a multi-family building on Kings Row following a 911 disconnect and reports of gunshots. Upon arrival at 1:34 p.m., officers encountered 45-year-old Demarces D. Boyce armed with a handgun. Boyce initially dropped the weapon but quickly retrieved it, prompting officers to establish a tactical perimeter and use communication and de-escalation techniques to manage the situation. Teens arrested for damaging, burning mailboxes in Wisconsin According to authorities, the standoff included support from multiple agencies, including police crisis negotiators from the Maple Bluff and Fitchburg Police Departments, as well as a K9 unit. Officers used both lethal and less-lethal tools to ensure the safety of all involved. Negotiations led to Boyce surrendering without further incident. Officers arrested him on charges of 2nd Degree Recklessly Endangering Safety and Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon. Boyce, who has a 2013 conviction in Dane County for being a felon in possession of a firearm, was transported to the Dane County Jail after an assessment. During a sweep of the building, officers found evidence that Boyce had fired two shots in a common staircase. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, though bullet holes were discovered in the stairway. A .38 special revolver with spent and unspent rounds was recovered. Police stated that Boyce believed intruders were attempting to enter his apartment, but no evidence of intruders was found. Investigators suspect drug and alcohol use may have been factors in the incident. Monona Police Chief Chaney expressed gratitude for the professionalism and restraint displayed by officers, highlighting their commitment to preserving lives and ensuring their own safety. “This situation could have ended tragically,” said Chaney. “Our officers relied on their training, instincts, and teamwork to bring about a safe resolution. Their actions saved a life today.” Wisconsin man arrested for OWI after crashing into bus station The Dane County District Attorney’s Office will determine whether to pursue additional charges. Authorities also consulted human service professionals, given prior concerns about Boyce’s behavior. The incident remains under investigation.
