DOGE committee will look for ways to slash trillions in spending
Dec 27, 2024
WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) - The year may be winding down but for Team Trump, the transition to the White House is in high gear, that includes tech billionaire Elon Musk's DOGE initiative to dismantle parts of the federal government.
Musk appears eager to get to work to cut down on federal spending and slash the country's massive debt.
On X Thursday, he compared the inner workings of the federal government to the Department of Motor Vehicle, but Democrats are calling Musk the richest man in the world who is vastly out of touch and warn his cuts to thousands of federal workers and millions of Americans could affect the economy.
"We're looking to save $2 trillion,” said President-elect Donald Trump.
Musk, with the help of businessman Vivek Ramaswamy, says they're deep diving ways to slash the national deficit which has ballooned to $36 trillion.
They met with lawmakers this month on Capitol Hill to float ideas such as scrapping the IRS which employs more than 80,000 federal workers, canceling diversity grants to the Department of Education, modernizing government technology and privatizing the U.S. Postal Service.
"I think this is a once in generation opportunity,” said Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas.).
Senator John Cornyn is ready to work with Musk but is promising not to touch Social Security or Medicare and Medicaid which makes up the bulk of the national budget.
"Neither party can unilaterally touch Medicare or Social Security,” said Cornyn.
Democrats are not holding their breath.
"Unfortunately, Elon Musk is largely proven himself to be an efficient liar and self-serving plutocrat and so I don't have high hopes for him having anything other than pretty awful ideas. But progressives are always willing to vote for and champion good ideas,” said Rep. Greg Casar (D-Texas.)
The DOGE committee is a top priority for Trump's second term. He says the goal is to finish its work by July 4th, 2026.
