ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) – The second night of Hanukkah was celebrated Thursday and various Menorah lightings took place across the region.
News 8 stopped by a lighting ceremony in Henrietta at the recreation center. It was followed by an indoor reception with music, latkes, and donuts.
The holiday symbolizes the miracle that occurred during the re-sanctified holy temple in Jerusalem thousands of years ago following a revolt. Rabbi Cohen talked about how far the religion has come.
"We can light the menorah in public without fear we're able to openly celebrate our holidays and practice our religion. It's something that we shouldn't take for granted. It's not always been the case and something to be celebrated is the fact that we're able to publicly celebrate and don't have to hide," Cohen said.
Hanukkah will be celebrated every day for another week.
