WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) -- You may not know his name, but you have likely seen his work over the years. The "Old West" probably conjures up familiar images of men on horseback, either racing into action or fighting to stay in the saddle as the bronco they are riding tries to buck them off. There's a good chance what you saw came from the hands of Frederic Remington. Born Oct. 4, 1861, in Canton, New York, Frederic Remington came from a military family that dated back to the American Revolution. His father was a Union Colonel during the Civil War. He began drawing at an early age, mainly cowboys and soldiers. He attended Yale College School of Arts for three semesters before dropping out, and after his father's death, he went west for the first time, traveling to Montana. In 1883, using his inheritance, Remington purchased a sheep farm near the now Butler County ghost town of Plum Grove, located Northwest of Potwin. However, it was a short venture as he sold the ranch the following year and moved to Kansas City. Kansas has $600 million in unclaimed property. Are you owed any? He would undertake several more business ventures before focusing entirely on his art and writing. In 1887, he held his first exhibit. The following year, his illustrations were used for Theodore Roosevelt's articles in Century Magazine. Over the next decade, his writing and art would appear in Harper’s Weekly, Harper’s Monthly, Century, Collier’s, Outing, Boys’ Life, and Cosmopolitan. He also authored multiple fiction and non-fiction books focused on the West. Over his short career, he created over 3,000 illustrations and paintings and 22 bronze cast sculptures. Remington died at just 48 on this day in 1909 from complications following an appendectomy. The school district that now serves the portion of Butler County where Remington once lived is named in his honor.
