Occupants, dogs evacuated as Petersburg firefighters battle twostory house fire

PETERSBURG, Va. (WRIC) -- Firefighters with Petersburg Fire Rescue and Emergency Services successfully extinguished a fire at a two-story home on Dakar Drive on Thursday night.
Shortly after 10 p.m. on Dec. 26, Petersburg reported that all units had responded to a structure fire on Dakar Drive. According to a social media post from the department, firefighters found a two-story multifamily building filled with heavy smoke.
"It was confirmed that all occupants had safely evacuated the residence, and the fire was located in a rear room," the social post reads. "Engine 3 quickly deployed an initial attack line and began fire suppression operations. Battalion 1 arrived on scene shortly thereafter and assumed command."
According to authorities, the incident was declared a working fire and units from Fort Gregg Adams and Chesterfield County Fire and EMS were called in to cover other areas while Petersburg units stayed at the scene.
"Battalion 1 provided an updated report, confirming heavy fire venting through the roof at the rear of the structure," the social post reads.
Two dogs were also reportedly rescued from the building.
The fire was marked under control at 10:39 p.m. All units are now "engaged in overhaul and ensuring full extinguishment."
