Helping women and children pack their bags

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) -- With the new year just around the corner, a business in Sioux Falls is helping those in need start anew.
"Pack your bags" is easier said than done for many people who end up at the Union Gospel Mission Women's Center.

"When the women come in with their families or their children, they don't have much, sometimes it's just the clothes on their back," UGM Human Resources Director Sarah Brink said.
Brink says the Women's Center is currently serving 41 women and children.
"When they are here and they're given clothes and items to take with them, they will be able to take luggage," Brink said.
It's a gift made possible by AAA Sioux Falls.
"We've contacted the Union Gospel Mission Women's Center and asked them if they would be in need of any luggage," AAA Travel Consultant Terry Ten Cate said.
When families leave the Women's Center, it's often with everything from totes to garbage bags, that's why AAA Sioux Falls is asking for donations of new or gently used suitcases, duffel bags, or backpacks.
"We're just trying to get as much as we possibly can to help as many women out there that may need the assistance," Ten Cate said.
Ten Cate wants to see the drive finish strong to benefit local families.
"This is something to help them a little bit where they don't have to put everything in a box and head out to their new location, give them some choices to pick several suitcases out there, pieces out there that would fit their needs and get a new start," Ten Cate said.
And the Union Gospel Mission appreciates the effort.
"We are very thankful," Brink said.
If you'd like to make a donation, new or gently used suitcases, duffel bags, and backpacks can be dropped off at AAA Sioux Falls at 3701 W. 49th Street through December 31.
