Community pantry in Suffolk offers essential items for those in need

SUFFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — Books, hygiene products and food are all things you can get at the ForKids Community Food Pantry in Suffolk, if you're in need.
"There is no judgement, no stigma. They take what they need and leave what they can," said Amanda Hayes, Community Engagement Senior Librarian for Suffolk Public Library said.
The community pantry may be small in size, but it is great in reach. Continued community support is needed for that reach to keep growing.
"We're a hub for information. People come to us when they need resources and if we can't get them to you, we're going to find you the person who can," Hayes said.
ForKids has proven to be a reliable resource center for many.
"ForKids is a nonprofit that focuses on helping impoverished families. We provide shelter as far as housing and educational programs for children," said Taleshia Howard, ForKids Senior Program Manager and Site Lead.
Many of the families the organization serves face food insecurity. That realization created a partnership between Suffolk Public Library and ForKids that led to them opening a community fridge and pantry at the ForKids Suffolk location.
"Hunger doesn't go away in December. It's always there. The need continues throughout the year," Hayes said.
The pantry is located at 119 West Constance Road in Suffolk. There is around-the-clock access to anyone in need, and access to drop off as well.
"Produce, eggs, milk, bread, those are high need items," Hayes said. "Soap, shampoo, menstrual products, those things go as fast as they get put in here," Hayes said.
"Having a pantry on-site for the community as well as our families is something that is amazing and is a dream come true," Howard said.
ForKids is a dream that Howard says she never wants to end, and it doesn't have to with your aid.
"While we love that people give during the holidays, please remember us during the lean season when children are out of school or the warm months. We're still here so if you have it in your heart, just give," Howard said.
You can donate and take from the pantry 24/7. The only items not accepted as donations are expired products and food that is prepared in someone's home. To learn more about ForKids, click here. To learn more about Suffolk Public Library, click here.
