MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The chair of the Memphis Shelby County Schools board says she still supports terminating the contract of Superintendent Marie Feagins, despite uproar from the community. "I look forward to our meeting on January 14, 2025, to resolve this issue," Joyce Dorse Coleman said in a statement released Thursday. The MSCS board postponed a vote on terminating Feagins' contract in a raucous Dec. 17 meeting, where members of the community rallied around Feagins' performance as superintendent. MSCS board postpones vote on Feagins’ future until January Board Chairwoman Joyce Dorse Coleman read the resolution to end the contract, which accused Feagins of three instances of professional misconduct. Feagins' attorney has called the accusations weak. The vote was split 4-4 before Coleman provided the final vote in favor of postponing the decision until Jan. 14. In a statement Thursday, Coleman said she will take Feagins' responses under consideration, but her position is unchanged. "I have received phone calls and emails and some citizens have approached me in the community about my resolution to terminate the contract of Memphis-Shelby County Schools Supt. Dr. Marie Feagins. I voted to allow Dr. Feagins to respond to the resolution because I felt that it was the right thing to do, but my position has not changed. Feagins’ attorney says accusations against her are weak "I want the public to know that it was a tough decision for me to bring this item before the Board. I understand the gravity of the situation, and I don’t take it lightly. "My resolution should not surprise you if you regularly follow the Board meetings. Some of my colleagues and I have publicly and privately shared our concerns directly with Dr. Feagins. She has a pattern and practice of not providing critical information and instead misinforming the Board Members. I don’t think this is something we can overcome. In our governance role as elected Board Members, we must work with her daily and rely on her for information." MSCS hired Feagins in February following a search process that lasted a year and a half. The previous superintendent, Joris Ray, resigned amid scandal in Aug. 2022, and an interim superintendent was eliminated from the pool of candidates. Memphis-Shelby County Schools elects new superintendent If the board voted to terminate Feagins' contract, it may have to pay almost half a million dollars remaining on her contract.
