RANDOLPH COUNTY, N.C. (WGHP) -- While a Randolph County family was winding down after a busy Christmas Day, their home went up in flames. The back of Steve Harrelson's Burney Road house is unrecognizable. The Asheboro home has been in his family for more than two decades. "There's too many memories in the house," Steve said. After a day of unwrapping gifts with his family, the Harrelson family's Christmas took an unfortunate turn. "We went to bed just before 9 p.m. We hadn't been in bed for not even 10 minutes, and the breaker flipped. He goes out to check it, and the back porch is already in flames," Steve said. Steve and his wife Angela say while getting their family out of the home Christmas night, their dog Gus was still inside. "He was actually in the room with my mother-in-law ... In the commotion, we thought he ran out here. He got scared, and he jumped under the couch ... The Seagrove Fire Department ... found him," Angela said. According to the East Side Fire Department, several agencies worked together to put out the blaze. Despite losing their Christmas presents and beloved family dog in the fire, the Harrelsons say they're counting their blessings. "We have family. We have friends that are helping. We've got our kids ... If it would've been any later, we would've been asleep. Thank God we were awake," Angela said. Though the house is still standing, Steve says he's also figuring out what's next for him and his family. According to the Seagrove Volunteer Fire Department, this fire was accidental, but the cause is still under investigation. A GoFundMe has been set up.
