Preservation group holding conference in Colorado Springs
Dec 26, 2024
(COLORADO SPRINGS) — Colorado Preservation Inc. will hold its 28th annual Saving Places® Conference for the first time in Colorado Springs.
It will be held at the Cheyenne Mountain Resort on Wednesday, Jan. 29, through Saturday, Feb. 1. According to Colorado Preservation Inc., the conference will explore how customs, traditions, and knowledge passed down through generations are intertwined with the built environment.
Examples of intangible heritage include the preservation of cultural diversity and community identity - family, faith, music, food, art, and language - which lie at the heart of the community and Colorado's historic resources.
Jennifer Orrigo Charles, Executive Director for Colorado Preservation Inc., said that preserving historic buildings can allow people to connect to those places, and having a place that slowly changes over time but is still there brings authenticity.
Usually held in Denver and Boulder, the conference brings together architects, contractors who are used to working with historic buildings, history lovers, and those who want to learn more. During the conference, Colorado Preservation Inc. announces the sites that they are going to work with throughout the year. The group helps with grant writing, technical help, and finding architects and contractors who can help with projects.
The four-day event features speakers, more than 40 sessions, tours, and networking opportunities. It is open to the public, and tickets can be bought on the conference's website. The event will feature a unique look at preservation in Colorado Springs.
First-time attendees will receive a registration discount, and scholarships are available to underrepresented and BIPOC communities. Attendees will have access to recorded sessions for six months after the conference and can register to join the event remotely through a live-stream option.
