BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — Baton Rouge police officers are urging drivers to remain vigilant while on the road after a teenager died in a Christmas Day accident on I-110.
Baton Rouge Police Department Sgt. Darren Ahmed, Jr. expressed sympathy to the family of Isaiah Garnett, 19.
"We give condolences to the family and friends, nobody wants that information, especially on Christmas Day," Ahmed said.
Officials said a Toyota 4Runner was heading south when Garnett lost control while navigating the “Governor’s Mansion Curve.” The vehicle went off the road, struck a raised berm and a concrete retaining wall and then overturned.

Ahmed said the holidays are the prime time to remind drivers about staying safe. He said to avoid distracted driving and steer clear of using your cell phone while behind the wheel."Don't text and drive, because when you look up, you won't have enough time to hit the brakes," he said.
Heavy traffic from people heading to and from holiday events calls for driving defensively, Ahmed said.
"Be aware when traveling to and from construction zones. The lanes merge and bottlenecks happen," he said.
Other important things to remember include:
Inspect your vehicle before each trip.
Get the proper rest before traveling.
Don’t speed.
Wear your seatbelt.
Leave early to allow plenty of time.
Drive sober.
Leaving plenty of space between you and other drivers is a problem noticed by Gonzales resident Kay Salbador.
“I've really almost gotten hit several times," she said. "People cut over without enough room in front of you. They cut straight over and cut you off. There’s lots of speeding and driving very reckless."
With severe winter weather, the National Weather Service urges you to have multiple ways to receive alerts before your trip to plan accordingly.
