According to a report from NFL Network, the Detroit Lions are re-signing quarterback Teddy Bridgewater. The Lions later confirmed Bridgewater has signed to the 53-man roster, while also inking linebacker DaRon Gilbert to the practice squad. Last year, Bridgewater served as the team’s primary backup quarterback, but upon the season’s end, the veteran quarterback opted to retire to coach youth football. Bridgewater ended up coaching his old high school—Miami Northwestern—to the Class 3A state championships, where they won 41-0. While Bridgewater barely played in his only season in Detroit, coach Dan Campbell widely praised him for the influence he had on the locker room throughout the season. “Teddy’s been unbelievable,” Campbell said back in December 2023. “I can go down that whole road, now. Teddy’s been unbelievable for a lot of people here. He’s a huge asset for us, aside from the obvious, which is if we need him, he’s a guy that can go in and win for us. But, man, he does so many things behind the scenes that I think a lot of people don’t even realize. He’s a valuable asset for our team.” In particular, Campbell has credited Bridgewater for helping receiver Jameson Williams in his maturation and was an asset to quarterback Hendon Hooker, the team’s 2023 third-round pick. Now with the Lions headed down the stretch and into the playoffs, Bridgewater will continue to provide strong leadership in the locker room, plus he can be a veteran emergency option should anything happen to Jared Goff.
