Dec 26, 2024
TOPEKA (KSNT) - With foggy conditions blanketing northeast Kansas, here are some tips for driving in the mist.
On Thursday, Dec. 26 fog and misty conditions reduced visibility to 1/4 mile in some areas. KSNT Chief Stormtrack Meteorologist Matt Miller said to prepare for foggy conditions over the next couple of nights. He said the conditions will linger until Saturday, Dec. 28 when temperatures are expected to rise.

The National Weather Service (NOAA) said dense fog can be hazardous to drivers, mariners and aviators. The National Weather Service (NWS) has tips for driving in fog conditions:
Slow down and give yourself extra time to reach your destination.
Use fog lights if you have them.
Use your low-beam headlights and make sure your taillights are on.
Never use your high-beam lights because they can cause glare.
Leave extra space between you and the vehicle ahead.
Follow road lines with your eyes to make sure you're in the right lane.
If the fog is too dense for you to see clearly, turn on your hazard lights and pull into a safe location.
If there is nowhere to pull over, pull off of the road as far as possible, turn on your emergency brake so your taillights are lit and turn on your hazard lights.
The Kansas Department of Transportation reports that foggy conditions accounted for 4.34% of all weather-related crashes in 2023.
