PORTLAND, Ind. (WANE) - Jay County officials are working to uncover what led to a fatal fire on Christmas Day.
The Portland Fire Department said in a Facebook post crews responded to the fire shortly before 4:45 a.m. Wednesday. In a joint effort with the Bryant Volunteer Fire Department, crews worked to put out the flames, which had sparked in a trailer park off US 27 near East 100 North, Portland police confirmed.
Firefighters found someone inside the home who was pronounced dead, and according to the Facebook post, the flooring was already almost all burnt up by the time crews arrived.
More officials arrived at the scene, including the State Fire Marshal, the Portland Police Department, the Jay County Sheriff's Office, Jay County EMS and the county coroner's office.
The victim's identity has not yet been released, and the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
