Angel Tree program meets need with increased signups

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – Hundreds of families' Christmas wishes have been fulfilled this holiday season, thanks to the Fort Wayne Salvation Army.
According to Social Services Director Timothy Smith, all tags from 45 angel trees around Allen County have been swiped and retuned to Salvation Army headquarters attached to boxes and bags of gifts.
These tags included just under 900 families, with almost 3,000 children. Each angel tree kid was gifted two toys, two outfits as well as other small presents they had written on their angel tag just last month.
The Angel Tree program served an additional one hundred and fifty families this holiday season.
But Smith said the increase in Angel Tree families is not unique for Salvation Army programs.
He had seen double the amount of people sign up for social services over the past year and a half.
Smith contribute the success of the program to community members who put their own money and time into gifts for families in need.
He said Angel Tree parents especially appreciate their help.
"Over the years, I realized that we're giving the kid a toy, but we're giving the parents hope," Smith said. "They realize they're not forgotten, there's somebody out there that cares, and they have that ability to take care of their children and show them that love."
