Council President Helms said after reflecting on the last four years serving District Two, he has decided not to seek reelection and will dedicate more time to his family, especially his grandchildren, and cherish the moments that his next chapter of life brings.
"I have spent my adult life serving our Nation and community, but being present for these precious moments in their lives is important to us. While stepping back from an official role, I remain committed to supporting and being an active member of our world-class community," wrote Helms.
City Councilmember Mike O'Malley
Councilmember O'Malley spoke about his time on City Council and how he helped with the project of transforming the northern section of Marksheffel Road from a two-lane road into a major north-south arterial road, helping people in Banning Lewis Ranch and Black Forest travel to Peterson and Schriever Space Force Bases.
Councilmember O'Malley also spoke of his efforts to convince Colorado Springs Utilities to have more than one source and preferably its own second line to ensure Colorado Springs maintains its 99% reliability. Councilmember O'Malley said he will be volunteering in some way to leave Colorado Springs in a better place then when he found it.
Councilmember Yolanda Avila of District Four will also not be on the ballot in April. Avila was re-elected in 2021 and councilmembers are limited to two consecutive terms in office.
