BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries enforcement agents are investigating a hunting accident that happened on Dec. 23 in Zachary.
According to LDWF, two people were unknowingly hunting deer on the same small private property where both had permission to hunt. One hunter mistook the other for a deer and accidentally shot him with buckshot from a 20-gauge shotgun.
LDWF said the injured hunter was airlifted to Our Lady of the Lake Hospital and is being treated for non-fatal injuries.
LDWF agents learned that neither hunter was wearing the required hunter’s orange safety gear or carrying deer tags. The shooter was cited for hunting deer without possessing deer tags and failing to wear hunter’s orange.
Additional charges may follow as the investigation continues, LDWF said.
