CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) - Massachusetts has gone through a variety of changes throughout the year, as new businesses opened their doors for the first time, while others shut down for good. The Federal Restaurant and Bar, a 22-year-old establishment in Agawam, closed in October. Co-owner Ralph Santaniello said that family health reasons were one of the deciding factors in selling the 162-year-old building. Santaniello and his brother-in-law and business partner Michael Presnal may no longer run The Federal together, but months earlier in April they opened up Lola's, a Mexican restaurant that opened in the Longmeadow shops nearby their other restaurant, Posto Italian. Lola's combines Mexican and coastal flavors that have kept customers coming back for more. The restaurant, co-owned by Bill Collins, Ernesto Quinteros and Manfredy Carballo, takes a modern approach to Mexican cuisine and incorporates Asian flavors into their dishes. Carballo also serves as the executive chef at Center Square Grill in East Longmeadow. Cinephiles living in the Worcester area lost another movie theater as the West Boylston Cinemas shut down in May. The closure of this budget-friendly theater left only one cinema in the Worcester area, the Elm Draught House in Millbury, expanding what some are referring to as the "movie theater desert". The Holyoke Mall invited new vendors and brands in throughout the year, filling in empty storefronts from previous departures. Notable shop openings within the mall include King's Jeweler, A Sneaker City, IT'SUGAR, and MINISO. New restaurants and food vendors also set up shop at the mall this year, such as Milkshake Lovers and Monsoon Bistro, which specializes in Southeast Asian cuisine. Big Lots announced in December that after closing down hundreds of stores across the state and filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, they are planning to officially close all of their locations. More than 400 of their stores have already shut down in Massachusetts, and a total of 963 more have begun their "going-out-of-business" sales to bring an end to Big Lots and the new year. While Massachusetts has seen the coming and going of different businesses in 2024, there is sure to be more to experience in 2025.
