HYDRO, Okla (KFOR) — While many are spending the day unwrapping gifts, one Oklahoma family is gearing up to hit the road to help hurricane victims. "It's what the season is really about, it's what it's all about, it's not about us, it's about them," said Oleta Walker. It all started as a plan to deliver one camper to North Carolina to help those displaced from Hurricane Helene, but it turned into something much bigger. LOCAL NEWS: Red Andrews Christmas Dinner draws thousands "We had one camper bought and three more came together real quick for us to where we could buy and then everybody from the community and just around the woodwork just trying to help," said Tim Walker. The family turned to Facebook to ask for donations, so they can provide more than just the campers. "Asked for anybody that had any stuff, blankets, sheets, pots, pans, stuff like that to stock it that we would be happy to take it and they showed up everywhere, I opened the door and my porch is full of stuff," said Walker. The family has spent the last week preparing each camper and filling them with the donations. "We clean and work on them until 9:00 or 10:00 at night, sometimes 11:00, just trying to get it done, so we can get gone," said Walker. They plan to leave Thursday morning to make the 1,000-mile drive to Spruce Pine, North Carolina, to deliver the campers to displaced families. "At the time in that area, there's over 20 families that are living in tents still and that's not acceptable," said Walker. Walker hopes their story encourages others to lend a helping hand to those in need this holiday season. "If you can, do your part, we're all humans, we all come into this world with nothing and will leave with nothing," said Walker.
